On-device dictation means your phone or computer turns your recorded speech into text by itself. The audio does not need to travel to a remote transcription server, so dictation can work without internet after the needed speech model is installed.

The simple path

The voice-to-text step stays on one device.

On-device dictation

  1. You speakThe device records your voice.
  2. A local model listensSoftware stored on that device makes the transcript.
  3. Text appearsYou review and use the result.

Why it matters

On-device dictation reduces the need to share a voice recording with a transcription provider and can keep working when your connection is unavailable. It can also avoid an account-based cloud service.

Local does not mean never connected

Apps may still use internet for downloads, updates, purchases, crash reporting, or optional sync. Once text is inserted into another app, that app takes over from there.

How KeyVox handles it

KeyVox downloads Whisper, or Parakeet where supported, then performs normal dictation locally on Mac and iPhone. No account is required.
